Child Marriages Prevented in Saharsa as Awareness Campaign Gains Momentum

Koshi Zone, Saharsa: An awareness campaign led by the "District Hub for Empowerment of Women" in collaboration with the One Stop Center, both operated under the Women and Child Development Corporation, Government of Bihar, is actively working to prevent child marriages across the district. As a result of the initiative, two underage marriage cases have recently been stopped, averting serious social violations.

Two Cases of Child Marriage Averted

The first incident occurred on May 5, 2025, in Bishanpur village under Sattar Katiya block, where a 15-year-old girl was being prepared for marriage. Timely intervention by officials, under the supervision of the District Programme Officer and Nodal Officer of Mission Shakti, led to the prevention of the marriage.

The second case was reported on May 7, 2025, in Sarahi Tola of Banagao block. Here too, the marriage of another 15-year-old girl was halted following prompt action. The family was made aware of the legal, social, and health-related consequences of child marriage.

District-wide Awareness Drive Underway

Across all blocks in Saharsa district, a sustained awareness campaign is being conducted at the panchayat level to curb child marriage. The campaign is spreading information about the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, which states that it is illegal to marry off a girl before the age of 18 or a boy before the age of 21.

Appeal for Community Participation

The district administration is urging community members, including priests and religious leaders, to report any cases of child marriage to the concerned authorities or contact the Child Helpline (1098) or Women Helpline (181). Collective community participation is crucial in eliminating this social evil.

In addition, flex banners and posters are being installed at major public places, temples, and intersections across the district to spread awareness about the child marriage prohibition laws.
