Vigilance Bureau Cracks Down on Corruption

Koshi zone, Saharsa...

Despite continuous action by Bihar's Vigilance Investigation Bureau against corruption, some dishonest officials remain undeterred. In a fresh incident from Saharsa district, District Fisheries Officer Subodh Kumar was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 in his office. The operation was carried out by a special team from the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, Patna.

As per reports, the arrested officer was demanding 20% commission from a fish farmer, Tunna Mishra, in exchange for processing subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The subsidy was related to the construction of a live fish sale center. Following this, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau in Patna with evidence, which led to a trap being set. Subodh Kumar was caught on the spot accepting the bribe and was immediately taken into custody.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sadanand Kumar, who led the Vigilance team from Patna, confirmed that the complaint was verified before the operation. Legal procedures have since been initiated against the accused officer.

It is worth noting that the Vigilance Investigation Bureau has been particularly active across Bihar in recent years. If we look at Saharsa district alone, as many as six officials have been arrested for bribery in the past five years. These include officials from the education, revenue, labor, health, and panchayat departments.

Notable arrests over the years include:

In 2021, a clerk from the District Education Office

In 2022, a Circle Officer (CO)

In 2023, a medical officer-in-charge from a Primary Health Centre

In 2024, a Block Development Officer under MGNREGA

In all these cases, officials were found guilty of demanding bribes in exchange for routine administrative work.

The latest incident has once again highlighted that despite the state government’s "zero tolerance" policy against corruption, bribery remains deeply rooted within the system. However, the swift action by the Vigilance Bureau has sent a strong message and has been welcomed by honest citizens and officials alike.
