Lok Sabha Seats Likely to Increase from 543 to 850, Implementation Expected by 2029 Elections
Koshi Zone: A major and historic change may soon be seen in India’s parliamentary system. The central government has proposed increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats through the Constitution (One Hundred Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026. According to the proposal, the current strength of 543 elected members in the Lok Sabha could be expanded to around 850 seats.
As per the draft shared by the government, approximately 815 seats will be allocated to states, while 35 seats will be reserved for Union Territories. All members will be directly elected. This significant change will be implemented after the next delimitation process, ensuring balanced representation in line with the country’s growing population. Future general elections will be conducted based on these newly defined constituencies.
It is noteworthy that the government has been considering this expansion for a long time. The new Parliament building has also been designed keeping this possibility in mind. Sources suggest that the proposed changes may come into effect from the 2029 general elections, making the Indian Parliament more expansive and representative than ever before.
