Drinking Water Crisis at Sonbarsa Block Headquarters, People Troubled by Defunct Hand Pumps
Koshi Zone: A severe drinking water crisis is deepening at the Sonbarsa Block Headquarters amid the scorching summer heat. Out of the three hand pumps installed in the block office premises, two have remained out of order for nearly a year, while one hand pump was repaired and made functional through the collective efforts of local residents. As a result, people visiting the office are facing immense difficulties.
Local residents stated that the situation has become more serious with the rising temperatures. Villagers, women, elderly people, and children visiting the office premises are being forced to wander in search of drinking water. Meanwhile, animals are also suffering due to the non-functional hand pump located in front of the Registration Office.
People alleged that while cold drinking water and water ATM facilities are available for senior officials, common citizens are deprived of basic drinking water facilities. Villagers further claimed that despite repeated complaints, neither the local administration nor the PHED department has taken any concrete steps so far.
The residents have demanded immediate repair of all the damaged hand pumps.
Meanwhile, PHED Junior Engineer Bhole Shankar Prasad stated that a list of defunct hand pumps at public places has been sought from the BDO office. Repair work will begin as soon as the list is received.
